The company has expanded its offerings with products like Robinhood Retirement, Gold Card, joint accounts, crypto trading, and advanced tools—positioning itself as a full-service platform for the next generation of investors.To mark this growth and signal what’s ahead, Robinhood partnered with brooklyn-based Porto Rocha to unveiled a bold new visual identity.Photographer Lauren Bamford and set stylist Sarah Pritchard were commissioned to create a series of still-life photographs that convey the brand’s sophisticated look and feel across various touchpoints. Together with illustrator Pi-slices, we built an extensive illustration library to represent the brand across marketing materials and within the product itself. We had to comply with strict legal regulations, meaning our visuals couldn't be overly promotional or make unrealistic promises. And, in a similar fashion to how many culturally impactful editorial magazines create their covers, we simply decided to work with our own brand palette to choose the most suiting accent for each cover. To accompany the relaunch of the playlist we proposed a visual identity that builds from the same concept urgency.The revamped playlist, which has 43 versions worldwide, will continue to serve as the leading destination for listeners who want to discover new music from both established and emerging talent. With over 3.5 million followers in the U.S. and 8 million globally, it’s an achievement and milestone for artists to have their new tracks included on the list. We needed to be bold, fresh and vibrant. For these reasons, we went with the italicized version of Spotify Circular, but made our thickest font-weight, Black, even thicker – and added a tail to visually communicate speed.&nbsp;We developed a motion language that works both as an intro animation and transitions between content. It’s supposed to give a quick glimpse of what you’re about to see, but most of all, set up the stage for what has just arrived. The playlist worth the wait. the best streaming platform. The bitrate is higher, the compression is lossless, and the bit depth is &gt;16-bits. But it’s really about the feeling of knowing you’re listening to the best music and what that says about you. Say Hi to HiFi.Because HiFi is kind of like your listening just leveled up. We wanted to launchHiFi by speaking to music lovers through a full funnel campaign that introduces the product, builds credibility and ultimately get people to try HiFi.The lyrics are sharper, the bass is deeper, the high notes are crisper. That all adds up to a heightened experience that means you enjoy the music even more. For below-the-line and online video components, we decided to use high definition, almost abstract 3D that alludes to typical listening environments and how HiFi enhances the listening experience. We partnered with creative agency Man Vs Machine to create a series of high-fidelity 3D image assets to represent the different, powerful aspects of audio HiFi that still felt true to Spotify’s playful nature, along with a set of unique guidelines that were based the Spotify Premium visual system for different agencies and regions working with the campaign. it’s seventh year as a date on the cultural calendar for music fans worldwide, 2021 Wrapped took another year that refused to be normal and asked “what is normal, anyway?” — and gave listeners ways to visualize, discuss, and share their annual recap like never before. Available in 30 countries for the first time, the in-app experience culminated into a worldwide celebration of individuality—together.2021 Wrapped’s design embodied the twists and turns of the year-that-was, using an undulating ribbon to guide users through the experience with custom designed icons and a vibrant color palette that brought out fun and positivity in a less-than normal-year.2021’s in-app Wrapped experience put a brand new lens on fan’s listening data, visualizing data in deeply artistic, emotional, and meaningful ways. In order to tell a visually engaging and culturally relevant story that went beyond listing data points, we tapped into the growing trend of new age spirituality and asked: "What if your listening had an Aura?".&nbsp;To connect the mystical with the mathematical, we worked closely with our product team and also consulted with a real aura reader to ensure that the auras we created were authentic. Audio Aura was a combination of sound, data, science, and mysticism. It was inspired by aura readings, a specialized photographic technique that reveals the color of a person's energy. The existing Riot Games brand manual had strong visual foundations, but it’s design needs were expanding rapidly. Here were some challenges that were faced and how we pushed the guidelines to accommodate them. Logomark The Fist logomark is the most recognizable element of Riot Brand. For a company that prides itself on it’s creativity and visuals, using our standard logo bumper on every creative output started feeling reptitive and too corporate. We eventually felt the need to expand our library of assets so that we had a larger range of expression.&nbsp;For high visibility campaigns such as the League of Legend’s World’s Championship tournament and Valorant Champions Tour, we created bespoke 3D assets and animated bumpers. In addition to the 3D assets, we decided to introduce 2D Fist illustrations as a means of creating quicker, but equally effective brand expressions. Our first set included 27 of them. Some had more agnostic art themes, while others were tied into the lore and narrative our games.&nbsp;We also created a set of guidelines to enable other teams to find their own ways to integrate the Fist more seamlessly into their environments.Cross-game and Partnership Logo GuidelinesPrior to the creation of the brand guidelines, there had not been much cohesion between the 5 games for displaying different logos together. Each game had it’s own system and there was a need for some structure around how logos would show up along side one another in Riot brand’s communications. Since a large number of our marketing work was partnership campaigns, we had to consider this fact and implement a set of guidelines internally as well as for external partnerships. LayoutsOur existing layouts used a cropping device that’s informed by the shape of the fist. One of the issues we came to face as Riot Brand was finding ways to portray the different games in a single image.&nbsp;Each of our games had a distinct look and feel, but we needed more ways to feature them in the same space while preserving the integrity of each one. By using the angles of the Fist, we created a flexible system for showcasing multiple images.Riot Sans 2.0The design of Riot Brand’s headline font Riot Sans was also inspired by the angled shapes of the Fist icon. However, after using it for some time, we realized that the ink traps often made it difficult to read and was best used only as display type. We underwent an exercise with Colophon Type Foundry to refine the typeface and introduce an option to turn off the ink traps for better legibility.&nbsp;In addition to the ink traps, we also collaborated with Colophon and Riot’s regional markets to bring the typeface to 10 other languages.Social MediaRiot Game’s social channels are one of the main marketing outputs for the brand. It is also where the visual framework gets tested the most as it requires iterations that can accomodate many different types of content. We created a simplified toolkit with templates that could help our creative partners find solutions to quick social activations. Over the past six years, Wrapped has quickly grown from a simple way for our 320 million listeners to look back at how they’ve listened to a global data-powered campaign celebrating the intersections of music and culture to now, a cultural event in its own right.In 2020, Wrapped was bigger than ever, providing some necessary joy and spreading a message of gratitude and resilience around the world. And for the first time ever, we built the experience within Spotify itself, allowing users to explore and share their unique data stories right from their phones. We infused the experience with positivity, starting users off with a win and celebrating all the ways they exhibited resilience in a difficult year. Knowing that our users are always craving a more detailed look at their data, we showed them exactly how their top song got them through 2020, complete with the day they discovered it and the day they streamed it most. We tested users’ knowledge of their listening habits, asking them to guess their Top Podcast, Top Decade, and Top Artist. To reward our most adventurous listeners, we created a custom suite of data-driven badges, each more exclusive than the last. We wanted Wrapped to build connections and spark gratitude so we gave users the ability to thank their top creators right from the app. As always, we gave each user their very own Wrapped card to post with pride. With over 50 million total shares this year, we dominated the cultural conversation like never before.Throughout 2020, creators helped to make staying home just a little better. So we used the Wrapped creator experience as an opportunity to say thanks, showing artists and podcasters all the ways they brought their listeners together. Creators discovered how far their top content travelled, the countries in which their base grew the most, even how many total hours their content was streamed. And if creators wanted to share the love with their fans, we helped them do it, right from the app.In a year when so many of us had to stay apart, users enthusiastically seized the opportunity to connect with each other and the creators who helped get them through. With the launch of Wrapped, the entire internet came together for over twenty-four hours, sharing their unique data stories, creating countless memes, and focusing on some much-needed good news. With the ambition to unify Spotify’s global marketing work, we created a directional design system containing three different articulations of the brand. The directions called Focused, Playful and Editorial each express the brand in a unique way and can be used appropriately. The toolkit, a 300+ page document, displays a detailed view of how to use the directions in a number of applications ranging from ATL, animation, social, interactive, banners, partnerships and more. Safe. Personal. And tons of fun. Kids love to explore sound. And they get their fix in lots of different places. They’re listening to audiobooks on the morning ride to school. Showing off their dancing skills around the living room speakers. And searching out the latest online music videos by their favorite artists. There’s audio everywhere, and kids can’t get enough. The thing is, all of these audio experiences were built with adults in mind. Which means they’re not easy for kids to navigate. They’re not much fun to use. And they aren’t always the safest spaces for impressionable young people.Spotify Kids is a world bursting with sound, shape and color, where young listeners begin a lifelong love of music and audio.The app lets children aged 3 - 12 explore their favorite sounds in an environment built just for them. It’s a safe zone that parents can trust and, most importantly for kids, it’s really really fun. None of that boring adult stuff. We created a set of playful avatars to guide kids through the app and make the experience feel approachable. These characters also show up in marketing beyond the kids’ app. To help parents differenciate but also instantly recognize the app, we developed a dedicated icon that feels fun yet distinctly Spotify. From Spotify’s core palette, we derived an accessible set of colors tailored for kids and introduced three fun themes to give users a more playful, customizable experience. Even the error states felt friendly and easy for kids to understand.
