«RELAY 034»
In December 2023, I travelled to Itoshima, Japan for a long awaited art residency at Studio Kura with two friends @hellumelu and @rollround. It was originally set for 2020 but had to be postponed due to Covid.
We explored the region by foot, bikes, and every type of public transportation available to us - buses, trams, ferries, local trains, high-speed rail. We documented our journies in a travel log while we were back at the residency house, and prepared for an exhibition scheduled for the end of the program.
It was a true collanborative process. We intended to create a travel log going into the residency, but had to find a way to combine our three art styles into a book. Melissa works primarily with guache, while Cheryl worked digitally. I was primarily in-charge of the graphic design.
The book infuses design elements inspired by public transportation in Kyushu. Fonts used within the book are the same ones found in the wayfinding system specific to the regions metro.
Many of the photos in the book were taken with a film camera.
The title “Relay 034” was sparked by a relay train that we had to take that connected us to our Shinkansen, as some tracks were still being constructed at the time. We liked the idea of being passed and received from place to place.
Our studio space at the residency.
